During mission editing and addon editing you may come across situations where actions or features you would like to have in your mission or addon cannot be accomplished using the basic or even the more advanced capabilities of the mission editor or within config files in the case of addons.

Some examples of this might be really cinematic cutscenes in missions or special animations for an addon. The solution to this is to take advantage of the game-engine's ability to call on an even more advanced feature known as scripting. Arma' s scripting language gives you a more direct control of core game features. With any combination of these commands and functions you can create custom processes that meet the specific needs of your mission or addon.

It's also something I find a bit of a problem with the otherwise helpful thread on commonly used scripts: for someone who's still a beginner at this, it's almost impossible to know whether a script that was the best of its kind in or still works as intended or whether it's been superseded by later, more up-to-date scripts.

You can't really go wrong by just starting somewhere and seeing if the script works for you. What you need largely depends on your mission.

UPS - Lightweight script and easy to set up. Allows groups to communicate, flank and attack the players. No artillery support and overly aggressive vehicles are main drawbacks.

Bit heavy resource wise, often avoid using this this and use DAC instead when arty is needed. DAC - Very complex, but highly useful with lots of options to customise. This pretty much does it all and is well balanced, but error messages can be a bit cryptic.

Then add a 'side: Blufor' attack helicopter in flight set special to 'flying'. Give this chopper some 'move' waypoints on the map and set the last waypoint to 'cycle'. Set the control of the chopper 'playable as gunner'.

While in game you can switch to the gunner position hit T. The AI will flying you around while you're busy with some city renovations. It's a great way to practice weapons. Of course you could just add a chopper 'flying' and set control to 'player as gunner'. Disclaimer: please note that I am not the original author of many of the scripts discussed here. I do however modify, clean, or otherwise streamline the scripts extensively to ensure that I fully understand them during the corresponding discussion, and to ensure they integrate well with the my own scripts.

Adding a little commonality does great things for helping people understand something abstract, and I've tried my best to ensure that the contents of this project are as accessible as possible.

I've tried to acknowledge the original authors as I've found them, but if I've left you out, please drop me a message on twitter or my blogI'm happy to engage everyone, and I'll probably learn something from the encounter. I've only recently started writing sqf scripts for Arma, and while it's been a fairly easy process, I've had trouble really hitting the ground running. I feel this could be improved for others with a few quality resources, and therefore I will be including a series of tutorial posts on my blog.

As I use community scripts in my projects, I will post the cleaned up code here, along with documentation explaining the use of each script along with examples.

These scripts are largely from resources I've used while working on sqf projects of my own.
